Amelie Mauresmo Withdraws from Qatar Telecom German Open

Former world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo has withdrawn from the Qatar Telecom German Open at the last minute.

The tournament announced on Monday that the two-time Grand Slam champion is suffering from a right intercostal muscle strain.

Mauresmo had been expected to play her countrywoman Aravane Rezai today at the Tier I tournament in Berlin. She has been replaced in the main draw by Uzbekistan’s Akgul Amanmuradova.

The winner of the Rezai/Amanmuradova match is scheduled to play world No. 2 Ana Ivanovic in the second round.

Mauresmo’s new rib injury is only the latest in a long line of setbacks for the Frenchwoman. Her 2007 season was plagued by an emergency appendectomy and a right adductor strain injury, forcing her to take two separate two-month layoffs from the WTA Tour.
